I am not a scholar, and this is not a fatwa. This article gives a practical, step-by-step method that follows the most widely cited view among scholars who treat Bitcoin as Zakatable wealth, with illustrative examples only. If you follow a different scholarly view, your calculation may differ. For your own situation, consult a qualified scholar you trust.
Nisab is the minimum wealth threshold. It is commonly calculated using the value of 87.48 grams of gold or 612.36 grams of silver, figures used in Sulivex's earlier Zakat articles. Many scholars recommend the silver nisab, because it is lower and means more people qualify to give. The classical basis for nisab on gold and silver is discussed in hadith literature, for example Sunan Abi Dawud 1563, 1564 and 1565. The Qur'an, Surah At-Tawbah 9:34, warns against hoarding gold and silver without spending in the way of God, and Surah At-Tawbah 9:60 lists the eight categories of people entitled to receive Zakat.
Do not calculate Bitcoin alone in isolation, on this view. Add together, on your Zakat date: cash, Bitcoin and other crypto you hold (at market value on that date), gold and silver, and trade goods, if any. Debts you owe that are due may be deducted in some views and not in others — that is a point to ask a scholar about, not a rule this article settles.
Zakat is generally due on wealth held for one full lunar year. Use the same Zakat date each year. If your total was below nisab at the start of the year and rose above it later, scholars differ on when the year starts — again, ask a scholar if that is your case.
Value Bitcoin at its market price on your Zakat date, not what you paid for it. Then apply 2.5% to the full total, not to the total minus nisab. Illustrative examples only: $1,000 of Zakatable wealth gives $25, $10,000 gives $250, and $50,000 gives $1,250. These are arithmetic examples, not a personal ruling, and they use round numbers, not live prices, so they stay correct even when Bitcoin's price moves.
How do you check nisab for zakat on Bitcoin? Nisab is the minimum wealth threshold, commonly calculated using the value of 87.48 grams of gold or 612.36 grams of silver, figures used in Sulivex's earlier Zakat articles. Many scholars recommend the silver nisab, because it is lower and means more people qualify to give.
What are the steps to calculate zakat on Bitcoin? Add all zakatable wealth together on your zakat date: cash, Bitcoin and other crypto you hold at market value on that date, gold and silver, and trade goods, if any. Check the hawl, one full lunar year, using the same zakat date each year. Value Bitcoin at its market price on your zakat date, not what you paid for it, then apply 2.5 percent to the full total, not to the total minus nisab.
What are the common mistakes in calculating zakat on Bitcoin? Using the purchase price instead of the zakat-date market price; calculating 2.5 percent only on the amount above nisab, instead of the full total, on the view described here; forgetting other zakatable wealth, such as cash or gold, and calculating Bitcoin alone; and treating the article as a fatwa, when cases involving staking lock-ups, exchange freezes, lost keys, or debts may not fit the general method and a scholar should be asked.
